Forks over Knives

Forks over Knives is on its way to a theater near you. The creators claim that a meat based diet will kill you and a plant based diet will save your life.

Here we go again.

OK. We all know that eating carrots is better than eating Cheetos. We all know that chomping on fruit is better than chomping on Froot Loops.

But does broccoli pack more of a nutritional punch than grass-fed beef? Do leeks contain more vitamins and minerals than lamb? Is there any scientific evidence whatsoever to support the idea that a non-processed food, animal-based diet is unhealthy or that a plant-based diet is healthier than a meat-based diet for human beings? I can tell you from extensive reading on the subject and from being a once-upon-a-time, low fat, no fat, grain-eating dude that the idea is absolutely false. There isn’t a shred of evidence to support the claim.

Now, am I going to support my statement with peer reviewed, scientific evidence? Well, I could but I don’t actually have to. The burden of proof lies upon the claimant and the Forks over Knives claim is:

…most, if not all, of the degenerative diseases that afflict us can be controlled, or even reversed, by rejecting our present menu of animal-based and processed foods.

The idea that processed foods contribute to or cause western diseases I’m fine with (but still – is there any good science to prove this?). But animal-based foods? To this I say to them “prove it.” And try as they might, they won’t be able to because there isn’t any research to support the claim.

But what you all must remember – please try to remember when watching the trailer and eventually the film itself – is that expert opinion does not fact make. Not even if it’s a doctor. The film makers must present peer-reviewed scientific research to support their contentions, not epidemiological surveys, observational studies or anecdotal, opinion-based opinions.

Not only this, lumping animal-based foods together with processed foods is disingenuous and smacks of serious agenda-ness. Are we really supposed to believe that eating a fresh water trout is the same as eating a Nabisco Triscuit?

Question – if not fish, what should dolphins eat? If not herbivores, what should lions eat? And what should frogs eat? Snakes? Spiders? Should we toss little kernels of corn into their little webs to save their little lives?

What these veggie-folks don’t see is that by adopting a plant based diet you, by default, reject a fake-food diet and this alone – the rejection of processed foods – is enough to reverse most western diseases. It’s not the intake of the plant matter that does the trick. It’s the cessation of the intake of garbage foods that enhances health. Capeesh? (For some people, I feel as if I need to say this fourteen different ways to let this really sink in.)

The vegetarian psyche is fraught with pseudo-science and all too often, unnecessary violence as Lierre Keith knows all too well. Her book The Vegetarian Myth: Food, Justice, and Sustainabilityis a book that everyone should read prior to seeing this movie.

Forewarned is forearmed.

The Low Carb Cruise 2011

Jimmy Moore, Becky Gandy, Kim Eidson and gang have done it again! The 2011 annual Low Carb Cruise was a smash hit!

Many of the same friends and esteemed experts returned this year. I’m smacking myself for not getting more pix of me with the likes of Dr. Andreas Eendfeldt, Dr. Michael Fox, Dr. Mary Vernon (special to my heart), Tom Naughton (hey Tom send me that pic of us!), Jacqueline Eberstein, Dana “the Energizer Bunny” Carpender, and so many others.

And this year the boat didn’t break! It was smooth sailing all the way from Ft. Lauderdale, to Key West, to Grand Cayman and then on to Jamaica – YA MON!!

Our stateroom came with a wonderful seaside balcony and the beds were comfy. My newly ACE certified personal trainer nephew was impressed:

But who was going to get the window bed?

First stop was Key West, Florida where I came in contact with a road whose beginning was also it’s end – the infamous Highway 1:

We didn’t do much on Key West other than have a nice lunch by the ocean then back on the boat by 3:30 and then on our way to Grand Cayman.

The next day was a day at sea on our way to GC and our first of two days of fantastic seminars. Once again I gave my talk called Why You Want Muscle. I wish there was a way to link my PPT presentation on this blog. Everyone’s presentations were fantastic. Tom Naughton’s talk almost made me wet my pants.

As we awoke the next morning, Grand Cayman Island showed it’s beautiful face. No I didn’t take a darn pic.

Here’s Jimmy and Christine Moore, my nephew Mickey and I on our way to the start our Grand Cayman excursion.

First we swam with stingrays (yes all those gray things in the water are sting rays – just like the ones that offed Steve Irwin). It was really interesting having all those critters sidling up to you without a warning.

I kissed one just to show my girls how brave daddy is.

Fred Hahn Stingray City (3)

When I showed them this picture, they said I was nuts. Thanks girls!

After our sting ray soiree, we snorkeled with fishies and tangled with turtles. On the way to the turtle house we made a left and wound up on the road to hell. Quite literally.

YA MON!

That’s me holding the ferocious creature! OK “tangled” is a bit over the top. Petted and cuddled is perhaps a better description. They were so cute!

Cute as they were, in the turtle sanctuary restaurant/pub, grilled turtle steaks were on the menu. Yes, of course I tried one! What meat-eating mammal wouldn’t? Truth be told, they were pretty bland.

And here we all are packed into our bus coming back from the amazing Grand Cayman excursion. As our Jamaican guide kept saying and as we dutifully replied: YA MON!

I decided this year I’d offer some personal training sessions both in groups and privately to really give folks a feel for Slow Burn (and to offset the cost of the trip). Many of the people who opted in for a session told me that this was a boon to their understanding of not only how slow slow really is, but what the burn should really feel like. Again, I kick myself for not taking pix and vids. Ah well…

The food on the ship was pretty good – better in the dining room than on the dining deck itself. One night I chowed down on 5 lobster tails and was in heaven. Rivaling those giant, juicy sea-bug tails were the pork ribs:

No those are not my fingers, but the fingers of a fellow low carber -a lass – but alas I don’t remember who she was.

Each night at dinner there was song and frolic. One night, one of our own started cutting the rug big time:

I tell ya – when you eat low carb you have energy busting at the seams!

There is so much more to tell that my head swims. I could spout for hours about the wonderful Swedes who have created a magazine called LC HF (low carb high fat), about the many conversation regarding exercise, personal challenges, successes, etc. Truly life changing stuff.

All in all I think virtually everyone came away with a renewed sense of purpose and, I think, an even more positive outlook on life livin’ la vida low carb (and strength training!).

Please join us on the cruise next year. You will be floored by the 2012 line up of speakers. You won’t be disappointed.

Eat fat and stay strong!
